NPA Solicits More Effective Media Collaboration for Port Modernisation Advancement, Champions Digital Reforms
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to port modernisation and digital transformation, while calling for stronger collaboration with the media to enhance public understanding of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemekara, made the call when he received members of the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) during a courtesy visit.

Speaking on the Authority’s reform agenda, Onyemekara said the NPA’s digital initiatives, particularly the Electronic Truck Call-Up (ETO) system, were introduced in line with global best practices to improve operational efficiency, eliminate bottlenecks and restore order to port operations.
Onyemekara noted that resistance to the reforms has largely come from individuals and groups that previously benefited from inefficiencies within the port system. According to him, the Authority has continued to collaborate with relevant law enforcement agencies to address traffic congestion along the port access corridors, stressing that although the NPA is not a law enforcement agency, the situation directly impacts port operations and Nigeria’s reputation as a maritime destination.
Drawing comparisons with leading international ports, Onyemekara explained that some countries temporarily suspend truck access whenever congestion reaches critical levels, underscoring the importance of effective traffic management in achieving efficient port operations.
He disclosed that the Authority is developing a comprehensive media engagement strategy to support the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme, assuring journalists that stakeholders would be adequately briefed before, during and after the implementation of the project.
“We want everybody to understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and the benefits it will bring. There will be adequate stakeholder engagement, including site visits for journalists to appreciate the scale of the modernisation project,” he said.
While acknowledging that major reforms often attract criticism, Onyemekara maintained that the ongoing initiatives are essential if Nigerian ports are to compete effectively with leading global maritime hubs.
He cited the performance of the Lekki Deep Sea Port as evidence that automation, modern infrastructure and efficient port management can significantly improve cargo throughput, operational efficiency and overall competitiveness.
On the issue of port development nationwide, Onyemekara explained that investment decisions are primarily driven by cargo volumes and market demand, noting that Lagos continues to handle the highest cargo traffic because it serves Nigeria’s largest commercial market.
He, however, clarified that the NPA is also investing in the development of eastern ports while encouraging greater private sector participation in deep seaport projects across the country. According to him, approved deep seaport projects in Badagry, Ibaka and Olokola have reached the stage where investors are expected to move from approvals to full implementation.
The NPA spokesman also commended maritime journalists for their role in promoting balanced, factual and responsible reporting, describing the media as indispensable partners in advancing reforms and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s port industry.
He assured CONMMEP of sustained access to information and regular engagement as the Authority intensifies efforts to modernise the nation’s ports, improve operational efficiency, enhance competitiveness and deliver world-class services.
Earlier, President of CONMMEP, Mr. Udo Onyeka, commended the NPA for its unwavering support for the growth of the association and the development of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
He observed that the Authority’s ongoing reforms, digital initiatives and infrastructure investments have continued to deliver measurable improvements, with ports such as Apapa and Tin Can Island receiving recognition in recent global port performance rankings.
Onyeka reaffirmed CONMMEP’s commitment to partnering with the NPA in promoting accurate, balanced and developmental maritime journalism, while supporting the successful implementation of the Authority’s port modernisation programme and other strategic initiatives aimed at transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector.
