URBAN BETTER VOLUNTEERS RUN 8 KILOMETRES TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY IN LAGOS
Some volunteers of the UrbanBetter has carried out an 8 kilometres run in Lagos to create awareness on the urgency of air quality improvement to sustain humanity on earth.
The volunteers, mostly youths, on Saturday embarked on a marathon to instill an African global movement tagged October Fest” to increase demand for resilient cities that conform to the new world order to sustainable climate change.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, the measure to let people know that they should be part of the future the desire by conforming with practices that advances air quality.
It reports that the awareness campaign from the Lagos University (UNILAG) gate to Sabo-Onike areas of Yaba, Lagos, featured display of habits that negates air quality, showcase of ones that advances good sustainable ecosystem devoid of carbon emissions.
The new world order of late has been efforts geared toward improved air quality through works that reduce carbon footprints in the environment that ranks second in the causes of human death.
Speaking at the event, UrbanBetter, Run Leader, Ms Rukayiat Salua, said that, the event, that was the first edition, would be sustained to enlist more volunteers into the campaign.
“It is an African global led movement that uses physical activities that appeals to youths such as sports, music and others to instill the culture of sustainable climate actions in people.
“Look out for bodies interested in better environment and work with them to advance the measure,” she said.
Another official of UrbanBetter, Mr Waziri Menasara, said that, the body through its activities such as data gathering of carbon emission in an area spur authorities to take actions toward improved air quality.
“Air quality gauge or measurements are being placed by the Lagos State Government to inform people about the environment.
“We highlight unhealthy dump sites and the use of renewable energy to respectively discourage carbon footprints and to improve human habits toward better air quality,” he said.
He regretted the common use of fossil fuel vehicles in the country, urged the authorities to initiate measures to decrease the number of fossil driven vehicles on the road to reduce carbon emissions into the air that depletes the ozone layer and expose humans to the vagaries of the climate (NAN)
