The Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) has sent a heartfelt congratulatory message to Women in Maritime as the world celebrates International Women’s Day.

SEBEC, in a statement signed by its Head of Research (HoR), Chief Dr. Eugene Nweke, and made available to the Media, he said that the annual event reminds him of some remarkable women he has had the privilege to work with in the maritime industry, saying that their dedication, expertise, and perseverance inspire him to the extent that he felt honored to join the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) in celebrating their achievements.

According to Chief Nweke, “we recognize the vital roles women play in advancing the maritime sector and acknowledge the challenges they’ve overcome in a traditionally male-dominated field. By actively supporting and mentoring one another, women in maritime have created a ripple effect of positive change, driving innovation, progress, and inclusivity.”

“As we celebrate these achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of women in maritime. We will actively work to break down barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for women to succeed. We believe in their abilities and are committed to supporting their growth and development.”

“Women in maritime embody the pioneering spirit, pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons. They are role models for women and girls everywhere, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, they can succeed in any field. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re reminded that the momentum for change is unstoppable. Together, we’ll continue to drive progress and create a brighter future for all.”

“We call on women in maritime to:

– Actively work together to create a more inclusive and diverse industry
– Demand change and push for policies supporting women’s empowerment
– Celebrate each other’s achievements and support one another in pursuing excellence.

“Finally, we urge women in maritime to develop a robust mentorship succession program to address the impending age gap in the next decade.
Happy International Women’s Day”!
