National Compliance Joint Taskforce of Licensed Clearing Agents- NCJTFLCA has written to the Nigeria Customs Service to reconsider the policies governing the importation of used vehicles through designated borders.

Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, Comptroller General of Customs

The letter addressed to the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and signed by its President, High Chief Dr. Basil Chudi Nwolisa, stated that their proposal “aims to curb the rampant smuggling of vehicles through unauthorized routes which has resulted in substantial revenue loss for the government.

The letter read in part:

” We, the National Compliance Joint Taskforce, respectfully appeal for the reconsideration of policies governing the importation of used vehicles through designated borders, specifically, Seme and Idiroko. Our proposal aims to curb the rampant smuggling of vehicles through unauthorized routes, which has resulted in substantial revenue loss for the government.

High Chief Dr. Basil Chudi Nwolisa, President, NCJTFLCA

Allowing the importation of used vehicles within acceptable age limits through designated borders can significantly boost revenue for the nation. Opening these borders can help regulate the flow of vehicles, reduce the influx of smuggled vehicles and illicit goods, including dangerous weapons.

This move aligns with the Nigeria Customs Service’s modernization efforts, as seen in the launch of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, designed to enhance trade efficiency and transparency .

Addressing Vehicle Shortages by permitting the importation of standard commercial vehicles, we can fill the existing deficits, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic growth and improving the quality of life of Nigerians.

We believe that this initiative will not only enhance revenue collection but also promote a more efficient and transparent customs administration. We look forward to your consideration of this proposal,” the letter stated.
