NUJ CELEBRATES DEMOCRACY DAY, SAYS THERE IS STILL WORK TO BE DONE

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has felicitated Nigerians as the country marks the momentous event that changed the socio political dynamics of the Nigerian State and eventually led to the unceremonious departure of the military from governance.

The event following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections led to the unfortunate demise of the man who symbolized the hope of Nigerians for a better tomorrow. Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the aggregated votes of all Nigerians in that year’s election paid the supreme price.
The letter which was signed by the National Secretary of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Achike Chude, read in part, “as we reflect on what was a traumatic period in the life of our country, we must be forever mindful of not allowing the mistakes of the past to invade our body politics. This country must be put on the part of irreversible democratic gains.”
” To do this will need a closer collaboration between the leaders and the led. The political leadership must be imbued with proper, altruistic zeal for the country. They must show true patriotism that results in making personal sacrifices that had its root in negative economic realities of our times. They must learn at all times to be unifiers and not dividers of our people along parochial lines.”
” As for our people from North, South, East and West, we have a duty to hold unto all that is good about our country and to work hard to eliminate those things that bring disrepute to her. We must strive to hold political leadership responsible and accountable at all times.”
” Justice, equity, fairness, inclusivity, must be the primary motivation for political leaderships across the land as they engage in their primary responsibility of leading.”
” It is only by imbibing this virtues that we all can work together to confront and hopefully overcome the insecurity challenges and myriad of socio economic dynamics assailing our country”.
” As we celebrate 25 years of unbroken democracy, the Nigeria Union of Journalists once more, felicitates all Nigerians”.
